The Night Agent - Episode 5 Summary & Recap

Causing a ruckus

The episode starts off with a flashback of Agent Chelsea Arrington when she attended the ceremony to join the Secret Service. Her mother came to support her. Back in our original timeline, Chelsea continued to keep a close watch on Maddie as VP Redfield arrived on campus to talk to her. After their talk, the VP and Maddie had to pose like a loving family for the photographers. However, deep down, Maddie was disappointed in her father and confided with Chelsea.

Their talk was interrupted when Peter and Rose came to campus looking for Chelsea. Peter wanted to know if Chelsea was protecting Maddie on the day of the metro bombing, as it might mean that Maddie was in danger. Chelsea was reluctant to share information at first but later on got clearance from Ben Amora to reveal that she wasn’t protecting Maddie that day. She however, did not reveal who she was actually protecting.

This became a big deal as Ben started questioning Diane Farr on why Peter was trying to imply that someone under Secret Service protection was in danger. Diane tried to calm him down but Ben still called an emergency meeting to get a more concrete explanation from Diane. All Diane could do was assure them that Peter would contact her by end of the day.

VP Redfield

As the lead on Maddie led to a dead end, Peter tried to work on the case from another angle. He got in touch with Hawkin’s widow and tried to get her to reveal some details on Hawkins’s death. Initially, she kept a tight lip about Hawkins’s case, but when Peter opened up about his father’s betrayal, she was willing to reveal some information.

Apparently, Hawkins discovered some inconsistencies in the metro bombing case and was looking into it. He was also the Campbell’s handler, so their deaths were personal to him. On the day of his murder, he was supposed to meet someone high up in an engineering company called Turn Lake Industries.

Peter brought this information to Rose and after some digging, they found that Turn Lake Industries CEO is someone called Gordon Wick. Wick and VP Redfield were friends from way back and Wick has been funding VP Redfield’s campaign.

That night, Peter called Diane Farr and told her that they have important information on the case. Diane asked Peter to come in to the White House with Rose and the drive as they had caused a ruckus over Maddie Redfield. When Peter and Rose left the library building, it was revealed that a tracker had been placed on their vehicle. Dale and Ellen were keeping track of their vehicle and tracking them to make sure they go to the White House.

Hawkins's wife was touched when she heard Peter's story on his father's supposed betrayal.

Romantic rendezvous gone wrong

Throughout the day, Maddie had been planning for her date with her art professor Paulo. She got Chelsea to help her pick a dress for an art exhibition, and Chelsea even borrowed Maddie her family’s necklace. Initially, Maddie though Chelsea wasn’t on shift that night. But Chelsea wanted to look after Maddie during the art exhibition and dismissed Erik for the night. This seemed to hurt Erik’s feelings.

During the art exhibition, Maddie asked to go to the restroom and then escaped through the window. She left a note on the mirror apologizing to Chelsea. Chelsea was extremely disappointed by this and got her whole team, including Erik, to look all over for Maddie. As they were discussing where Maddie could have gone, Erik theorized that the person Maddie is meeting must have been someone people were going to disapprove of, because she would usually confide in Chelsea regarding her crushes. Erik then noted that something seemed weird with Maddie’s art professor.

At Paulo’s home, Maddie wanted to go straight to the bedroom, but Paulo was hesitant. He wanted to discuss something with Maddie first. As Maddie undressed herself and Paulo, Paulo’s boyfriend (the man with the snake tattoo) suddenly entered and shot Paulo. Shocked, Maddie tried to run, but the man kidnapped her instead.

Additional Observations From Episode 5

  • Ellen and Dale have been fantastic villains. They were giving their own subplot and storyline.
In this episode, Ellen suggested that she and Dale kidnap another baby so that they could raise it as their own. Dale however rejected the idea as their jobs would be difficult with a baby.
  • Paulo’s boyfriend briefly mentioned that Paulo only came close to Maddie to help his environmental protection cause. This meant that Paulo had nothing to do with the metro bombing.
  • Rose found out that the ring with the cross sigil belonged to someone named Andrej Pavelić. Andrej had been reported missing and a drawing of Dale was on the internet as a wanted person for the case.
